Hello, I am Caro de Waal, I founded Eat Design in Cape Town, South Africa in September 2014.

What does Eat Design do?

Eat Design is a niche food and design team that develops bespoke, sensory experiences combining two simple, yet integral areas of life – eat and design.

I have an amazing team of freelancers (local and international) in the food, drink, design and media sector that are able to take on any project that is thrown at them. We love to be creative and push the boundaries, break the rules and cut the edge.

  • We can conceptualise and design anything from an edgy photo shoot to a live installation to a brand launch in an underground location.
  • We like to collaborate with other chefs, cooks, graffiti artists, mixologists, writers, ceramicists, blacksmiths, fashion designers, artists and more to create events that explore all the senses, excite and exhilarate.
  • We develop unique and exciting ways to interact between industries and the public thus activating dynamic social media engagement and media exposure.
  • We design social media strategies for brands in the food & beverage industry.

New York branch

I’ve traveled extensively and recently spent time in New York where I made ties with the brilliant marketing studio, Favoreat Design. Specialised branding, packaging design, experiential marketing and more. I will be collaborating with this exceptional studio run by design duo Daniel Lober and Valentin Boher.

History:

I started my studies in Fine Arts, moved on to Graphic Art, continued into Computer Graphics and  Multi-Media  and then into 3D Animation. I worked in front end graphics and web design for the first part of my career and then followed my passion into the world of food and cooking.

After completing a 3 year Grand Cordon Bleu at Silwood in Cape Town, I opened and ran a private catering business, Treat Catering, for 4 intense and satisfying years.

Then came 5 years at food24.com, Africa’s biggest online food presence with 2 years as Editor-in-Chief. I left in mid-2014 to start my dream company Eat Design, which weaves my history into one creative offering.
